OK, so it's a television show, and they're almost all fiction, but a little continuity in the script would be nice. I rag on Law & Order for their years-long representation of homeschooling parents as creeps, jerks and weirdos. Just once I'd like to see the homeschooled kid give the cops the tip that cracks the case just because the kid was home and observantly looking out the window instead of sitting in school. But, homeschooled prejudice aside, tonight's gaffe is just sloppy.
The (first?) murder victim's sister has arrived in town, and is suitably (for a change) distraught over her brother's death. As the sister is describing her brother for the police officers, she says he joined the Marines to be like his father. So far, so good. But then the sister says her brother showed up on her doorstep because he'd been discharged, and he was having difficulties getting his "Army benefits."
Time out. Marines who have ETSed (come to the normal end of service) do not get benefits from the Army. If any benefits are to be given, the Veterans Administration would be the correct agency, but that information that may be obscure for civilian writers. Still, it ought to be obvious to at least one person with authority on the L&O set that the Army doesn't disburse anything to Marines -- either the Marine Corps or the Navy does. Maybe the Law & Order writers should spend more time watching NCIS.
Oh, well. Enough late night venting.
